A Community of Imagination and Resistance
LOVE / DREAM / FIGHT LIKE A DIFFERENT WORLD IS POSSIBLE!
About
Mission: To cultivate community rooted in the struggle for liberation through acts of solidarity and mutual aid in the rural south.
Vision: To see a commitment to the struggle for liberation against the evils of oppression, exploitation, and alienation take root in the hearts and minds of our community.
Story: Jubilee is a grassroots organization based in Parrish, Al, dedicated to solidarity, mutual aid, and long-term community resilience. Our mission is to love, dream, and work toward a radically different world, one free from oppression, exploitation, and alienation through collective acts of imagination and resistance, starting in Walker County. Or more aptly put by suffragist Dorothy Day, “What we would like to do is change the world-- make it a little simpler for people to feed, clothe, and shelter themselves.”
Founded four years ago with the launch of the People’s Pantry, Jubilee operates outside traditional charity models by providing inviting neighbors to contribute, and cultivating programs alongside those we serve, rather than as outsiders or those who live detached from the realities that impact our community. Since the launch of that first initiative, we have expanded significantly in an effort to address poverty, hunger, isolation, and environmental degradation, along with rampant overdose deaths and stigma in the face of the opioid epidemic in Walker County. Entirely volunteer-run, Jubilee House has relied on donations, small grants, and thousands of hours of unpaid labor. While resourceful, this model is not sustainable.
